While speaking to Sky Sports, the Serbian suggested that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his team should focus on trying to keep clean sheets in pre-season rather than scoring at the other end.
“They have to defend. For me, when Arsenal get to pre-season, they don’t have to think about scoring goals, they need to think about keeping a clean sheet because that is what they have to learn – to defend.
“That’s the key if they want to challenge for the title because I think in the end, they will score 70 goals a season but they will concede 40. For a team who is in the top seven who concede that many goals, I think they are doing well to be in that position.”
The North London outfit possess a handful of attacking stars, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
This season, though, the club’s defensive frailties have been highlighted, with centre-back Shkodran Mustafi suffering the brunt of criticism from supporters.
Arsenal have the worst defence record out of the top six in the Premier League having conceded 45 goals.
Questions have also been raised over Petr Cech’s ability to continue as the club’s number one goalkeeper as the team have kept just 11 clean sheets in the top flight all season.
